oc-mirror: Unauthenticated access to local cache registry
Summary
oc-mirror, the OpenShift CLI tool for mirroring container images into disconnected environments, starts an embedded local cache registry that listens on all network interfaces without authentication or encryption. An attacker on an adjacent network can connect to this service to push tampered container images, delete cached images or access mirrored content. No credentials or user interaction are required, but the attacker must be on the same network segment.
Affected
- Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4.18 to 4.22 (listed as affected by default in the CVE record; exact affected oc-mirror versions not confirmed from a primary source)
- Red Hat Assisted Installer for Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 2 (affected status unknown)
Fixed in
Unknown.
- RHSA-2026:74380 (OpenShift Container Platform 4.20.41), RHSA-2026:74383 (4.21.36) and RHSA-2026:74429 (4.22.17) list CVE-2026-96577; check these advisories for the fixed package and image versions for your stream.
Workaround
Red Hat has not identified any known mitigations. Customers are advised to apply the security update when it is available.
- Not vendor-confirmed: restrict access to the cache port with a host firewall so only the local system can connect, and run mirror jobs on an isolated network.
Exploitation
- CISA SSVC assessment: exploitation none, automatable no, technical impact partial.
- No evidence of exploitation in the wild found in the sources reviewed; CISA KEV status should be re-checked.
- No public proof of concept found in the sources reviewed. EPSS listed at 0.00177.
Our recommendation
- Identify hosts where oc-mirror is installed or used, especially during mirror runs.
- Apply the Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform update for your stream as soon as it is available and confirm the fixed oc-mirror version.
- Until patched, run mirroring only on a dedicated host in an isolated network and block access to the cache port from other hosts.
- Do not run mirror jobs on shared workstations or guest networks until patched.
- Monitor for unexpected connections to the registry port and verify the integrity of mirrored images before use.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.

Original description (NVD)
A flaw was found in oc-mirror. During mirroring operations, the embedded local cache registry binds to all network interfaces without authentication or encryption instead of restricting access to the local system. An unauthenticated attacker on an adjacent network can connect to the exposed service to push tampered container images, delete cached images, or access mirrored content.
