CVE-2026-85377High 7.8

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

A type confusion flaw (CWE-843) in the Windows CD-ROM driver allows an authorized local user to elevate privileges. Windows Server 2016 is also listed as affected. The attacker needs an existing low-privilege local account or foothold, and Microsoft rates the impact on confidentiality, integrity and availability as high (CVSS 3.1: 7.8). Microsoft reports no public disclosure and no known exploitation.

Workaround

  • Unknown from Microsoft. The advisory is patch-based.
  • Secondary guidance (not from Microsoft): remove or disable unused CD-ROM hardware, or unload the CD-ROM driver in Device Manager.
  • Restrict local logons and standard user accounts on remaining systems.

Exploitation

  • Publicly disclosed: No (Microsoft)
  • Exploited: No (Microsoft)
  • Microsoft exploitability assessment: Exploitation Less Likely
  • Not listed in CISA KEV (per OpenCVE)
  • EPSS: about 0.3% (aggregator data, may change)
  • No public proof of concept found; keep monitoring.

Our recommendation

  • Inventory all Windows 10 1607 and Server 2016 systems and plan retirement or upgrade. Verify their end-of-support status on Microsoft's lifecycle page and check whether an ESU option applies.
  • Where still in use, install the update with build 10.0.14393.9612 or later and confirm the KB on the MSRC page.
  • Remove unneeded CD-ROM hardware or disable the driver where practical.
  • Limit local accounts and privileges on remaining legacy systems.
  • Priority: medium for SMEs still running 1607; low for fully patched modern Windows systems.
