Windows 10 1607: Information disclosure in Print Spooler Components
Summary
Windows Print Spooler Components on Windows 10 Version 1607 and Windows Server 2016 contains an out-of-bounds read flaw (CWE-125). An unauthenticated attacker on the network can disclose information without user interaction. Microsoft says heap memory from a privileged process on a server could be exposed. Only confidentiality is affected.
Affected
- Windows 10 Version 1607: builds 10.0.14393.0 to below 10.0.14393.9612
- Windows Server 2016: builds 10.0.14393.0 to below 10.0.14393.9612
Fixed in
- Windows 10 Version 1607 and Windows Server 2016: build 10.0.14393.9612 or later, released with the October 13, 2026 Patch Tuesday updates
- KB number: Unknown. Take it from the MSRC Security Updates section.
Workaround
- Unknown. Microsoft's advisory is patch-first and no vendor workaround was verified.
- Third-party guidance (not from Microsoft): stop and disable the Print Spooler on systems that do not need printing.
Exploitation
- Not exploited in the wild, according to Microsoft.
- Not publicly disclosed.
- Microsoft rates exploitation as Less Likely.
- No public proof of concept found.
- EPSS is about 1.0%.
- CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable yes.
Our recommendation
- Identify Windows 10 1607 and Windows Server 2016 hosts with the Print Spooler running.
- Install the October 2026 security update on these hosts.
- Disable the Print Spooler on servers and domain controllers that do not print.
- Confirm that no Print Spooler service is reachable from the internet, a DMZ or untrusted networks.
- Check the Microsoft lifecycle status of Windows 10 1607, as it is an old release.
