Windows 10 Version 1607: Elevation of privilege in Windows Kernel
Summary
Microsoft has fixed an integer overflow (CWE-190) in the Windows kernel of Windows 10 Version 1607 and Windows Server 2016. An authorized local user with a low-privilege account can elevate privileges, for example to SYSTEM. Remote exploitation is not possible; the attacker first needs a local foothold, such as phishing, stolen credentials or a malicious file. The CVSS v3.1 base score is 7.8 (High).
Affected
- Windows 10 Version 1607 (32-bit and x64): builds 10.0.14393.0 to before 10.0.14393.9612
- Windows Server 2016: builds 10.0.14393.0 to before 10.0.14393.9612
Fixed in
- Build 10.0.14393.9612 or later (per the CNA record; verify on the Microsoft Security Update Guide)
- Apply the October 2026 security update for this CVE. No KB article for 1607 was confirmed.
Workaround
Unknown. No vendor workaround is documented. If patching is not possible, restrict local logon and standard-user access on affected hosts (general practice, not specific to this CVE).
Exploitation
- Publicly disclosed: No
- Exploited in the wild: No
- Exploit code maturity: Unproven
- CISA SSVC: Exploitation none, Automatable no, Technical impact total
- EPSS: 0.00333 (very low)
Our recommendation
- Inventory all Windows 10 1607 and Windows Server 2016 hosts and confirm their build numbers.
- Deploy the October 2026 security update on all hosts that are still supported.
- Check the Microsoft lifecycle page for 1607 and Server 2016 and plan an OS upgrade or isolation for hosts that are out of support.
- Give priority to shared terminal servers, RDP hosts, kiosk and POS systems, and machines used by many staff.
- Monitor for unusual privilege changes and new local administrator accounts.
