Windows USB Driver: Heap-based buffer overflow enables local privilege escalation
Summary
A heap-based buffer overflow (CWE-122) in the Windows USB driver affects many Windows 10, Windows 11 and Windows Server versions, including Windows 10 Version 1607 and Windows Server 2016. An attacker with a low-privileged local account can exploit it to gain higher privileges, up to SYSTEM. Remote exploitation is not possible; the attacker needs prior local access, for example after phishing or malware infection.
Affected
- Windows 10 Version 1607 (before 10.0.14393.9612)
- Windows 10 Version 1809 (before 10.0.17763.9376)
- Windows 10 Version 21H2 (before 10.0.19044.7807)
- Windows 10 Version 22H2 (before 10.0.19045.7807)
- Windows 11 Version 23H2 (before 10.0.22631.7652)
- Windows 11 Version 24H2 (before 10.0.26100.9711)
- Windows 11 Version 25H2 (before 10.0.26200.9711)
- Windows 11 Version 26H1 (before 10.0.28000.3231)
- Windows 11 Version 26H2 (before 10.0.26300.9711)
- Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 (before 6.2.9200.26434 and 6.3.9600.23470)
- Windows Server 2016 (before 10.0.14393.9612)
Fixed in

- Windows 11 Version 23H2: 10.0.22631.7652
- Windows 11 Version 24H2 and 25H2, Version 26H2: 10.0.26100.9711 and 10.0.26200.9711 and 10.0.26300.9711
- Windows 11 Version 26H1: 10.0.28000.3231
- Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2: see the MSRC advisory for the fixed builds
Workaround
Unknown.
- No vendor-published workaround found in the sources reviewed.
- Check the MSRC advisory for an official mitigation.
Exploitation
- Not listed in the CISA KEV catalog; no known exploitation in the wild.
- EPSS score below 1 percent (very low).
- CISA SSVC: exploitation none, not automatable, total technical impact.
- No public proof of concept found in the searches performed.
Our recommendation
- Inventory all Windows 10 Version 1607 and Windows Server 2016 systems; these may be out of support, so plan upgrades or extended security coverage where available.
- Install the October 2026 cumulative updates on all supported systems; verify the build numbers against the MSRC advisory.
- Restrict local logon and USB device use on affected hosts until patched.
- Monitor for exploit publications and changes in the KEV catalog.
