Microsoft PostScript Printer Driver: Elevation of privilege (stack overflow)

CVE-2026-70110High 7.8

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

A stack-based buffer overflow (CWE-121) in the Microsoft PostScript Printer Driver allows a local attacker to elevate privileges. The attacker needs local access and a user interaction, but no prior privileges. The driver is not internet-facing, so the main risk is an attacker or malware already running as a standard user, for example after phishing.

The KB article numbers for the fixes are unknown.

Workaround

  • Unknown. The vendor provides a patch.
  • Until patching is complete, restrict local printer driver installation rights to trusted administrators.

Exploitation

  • No in-the-wild exploitation known. CISA SSVC assessment: exploitation none, not automatable, total technical impact.
  • No public proof of concept found.
  • EPSS in one snapshot was about 0.00475 (low predicted exploitation probability).

Our recommendation

  • Install the October 2026 Windows security updates on all affected systems, prioritising Windows 10 1607, Windows Server 2016 and other older builds.
  • Inventory all Windows systems and print servers, not only Windows 10 1607, because the vendor data covers many more versions.
  • Check whether any systems still run Windows 10 1607 and whether they have extended support; verify the end-of-support date on Microsoft's lifecycle page.
  • Restrict local printer driver installation rights now.
  • Monitor endpoints for privilege escalation attempts.
