Windows 10 Version 1607: Use after free in LSASS enables privilege escalation

CVE-2026-70015High 7.8

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

A use-after-free vulnerability in the Windows Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (LSASS) on Windows 10 Version 1607 and Windows Server 2016 allows an authorized local attacker to elevate privileges. The attacker needs a low-privileged local account and must already be able to run code on the system. Microsoft fixed the issue in its October 2026 security update. CVSS 7.8 (High).

Affected

  • Windows 10 Version 1607 (10.0.14393.0 to below 10.0.14393.9612)
  • Windows Server 2016 and Server Core installation (10.0.14393.0 to below 10.0.14393.9612)
  • Other Windows 10, Windows 11 and Windows Server 2019/2022 builds are listed in the CNA record.

Fixed in

  • Windows 10 Version 1607 and Windows Server 2016: build 10.0.14393.9612 or later
  • Delivered with the October 2026 Microsoft security update
  • Unknown: specific KB number for Windows 10 1607; confirm the build on the MSRC page before rollout

Workaround

  • No vendor workaround known; apply the update.
  • General hardening (not from the sources): enable LSA protection and Credential Guard where supported, enforce least privilege, run EDR.

Exploitation

  • Not listed in CISA KEV.
  • CISA SSVC: exploitation none, not automatable, total technical impact.
  • EPSS about 0.3% (0.00341 per Vulnrichment; Rapid7 shows N/A).
  • No public proof of concept found in searches; this does not prove none exists.

Our recommendation

  • Patch Windows 10 1607 and Windows Server 2016 to build 10.0.14393.9612 or later with the October 2026 update.
  • Inventory systems running these versions and prioritise servers and admin workstations.
  • Enable LSA protection and Credential Guard where supported.
  • Monitor for unusual privilege changes and new local administrator accounts.
