Summary

A heap-based buffer overflow in the Windows Kernel Streaming Service Driver allows an authorized, locally logged-in attacker to elevate privileges. The attacker needs a low-privileged account and local access, and no user interaction is required. Microsoft rates the flaw Important, and at the time of retrieval Microsoft reported no exploitation.

Workaround

Unknown. No mitigations were documented; patching is the only known fix.

Exploitation

  • Microsoft rates exploit code maturity as Unproven and reports no exploitation.
  • No public proof of concept was found during research.
  • CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable no, technical impact total.
  • EPSS is 0.00306 (low).

Our recommendation

  • Install the October 2026 cumulative update on all affected Windows systems, prioritising multi-user systems, terminal servers and file servers.
  • Check for older installations, especially Windows 10 and Server 2012/2016, and confirm whether Server 2012 is still in use.
  • Verify the fixed build for Windows 10 22H2 with Microsoft.
  • Monitor for unusual privilege escalation on shared systems.
