Windows Certificates: Local privilege escalation via untrusted pointer dereference
Summary
An untrusted pointer dereference in the Windows Certificates component allows an authorized local attacker to elevate privileges. The attacker needs a low-privilege account on the system and no user interaction is required. The vulnerability is not reachable from the internet by itself, but it can be used after an initial foothold, for example via a phished user or malware, to gain SYSTEM rights.
Affected
- Windows 10 Version 1607 and Windows Server 2016 (incl. Server Core): builds below 10.0.14393.9612
- Windows 10 Version 1809 and Windows Server 2019: builds below 10.0.17763.9376
- Windows 10 Version 21H2 and 22H2: builds below 10.0.19045.7807 (22H2) and 10.0.19044.7807 (21H2)
- Windows 11 Version 23H2: builds below 10.0.22631.7652
- Windows 11 Version 24H2 and 25H2, Windows 11 Version 26H2: builds below 10.0.26100.9711, 10.0.26200.9711 and 10.0.26300.9711
- Windows 11 Version 26H1: builds below 10.0.28000.3231
- Windows Server 2012 R2 (incl. Server Core): builds below 6.3.9600.23470
- Note: The NVD CPE lists only Windows 10 1607; the CNA record lists the wider scope above.
Fixed in
- Windows 10 Version 1607: KB5126868 (October 13, 2026), build 10.0.14393.9612
- Windows 10 Version 1607: KB5134123 (out-of-band, October 26, 2026), build 10.0.14393.9615, cumulative
- Other products: the first fixed build per product is listed in the affected section. KB numbers for other products: Unknown.
Workaround
Unknown.
Exploitation
- No public proof-of-concept exploit found.
- Exploitation in the wild: not confirmed. VulDB states no exploit is available.
- CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable no, technical impact total.
- EPSS at time of capture: 0.00341 (low).
- An unverified Tenable plugin for a KB update shows a CISA KEV due date for a different update; it could not be tied to this CVE and should be checked against the CISA KEV catalog.
Our recommendation
- Inventory all Windows 10 1607, Windows Server 2016, and other listed systems.
- Verify the fixed build and KB against the Microsoft Security Update Guide before rollout.
- Install KB5126868 or the later KB5134123 where support allows.
- Confirm the extended support (ESU) status of Windows 10 1607 systems with Microsoft before relying on the patch; plan replacement of unsupported systems.
- Restrict local logon on systems that cannot be patched and monitor for privilege escalation (suggested compensating control, not from a source).
- Check the CISA KEV catalog before raising the priority.
