Windows Key Distribution Center: Elevation of privilege
Summary
An improper verification of a cryptographic signature in the Windows Key Distribution Center (KDC), a Kerberos component, allows an authorized local attacker to elevate privileges. The attacker needs a local low-privilege account or an existing foothold on the system, and the flaw is not remotely exploitable. Microsoft states that a successful attacker could gain SYSTEM privileges, which on a domain controller would mean full domain compromise.
Affected
- Windows 10 Version 1607: 10.0.14393.0 to < 10.0.14393.9612

Fixed in
- Install the Microsoft security update for the affected build.
- Fixed builds: 10.0.14393.9612 (Windows 10 1607, Server 2016), 10.0.17763.9376 (1809, Server 2019), 10.0.20348.5761 (Server 2022), 10.0.26100.9711 (24H2), 10.0.26200.9711 (25H2), 10.0.26300.9711 (26H2), 10.0.28000.3231 (26H1).
- Server 2012: 6.2.9200.26434. Server 2012 R2: 6.3.9600.23470.
- Security update identifiers (KB numbers): Unknown.
Workaround
- Unknown. No workaround is documented in the CVE record or the sources.
- Reduce the risk by limiting local logon rights and administrative privileges.
Exploitation
- Microsoft reports: not publicly disclosed, not exploited, exploitability assessment 'Exploitation Unlikely'.
- CISA SSVC: exploitation none, not automatable, total technical impact.
- EPSS: 0.00227.
- No known in-the-wild use.
Our recommendation
- Patch domain controllers and Windows Server systems first, then workstations and Windows 10 1607 devices.
- Check whether Windows 10 1607 is still in standard servicing; if not, plan an upgrade or Extended Security Updates.
- Restrict local logon and administrative rights to reduce the chance of a low-privilege foothold.
- Keep CVE-2026-69640 (a separate, network-reachable KDC flaw) separate in your prioritisation.
