Google Chrome: Use after free in WebProtect
Summary
Google Chrome prior to 156.0.8078.47 contains a use-after-free vulnerability in the WebProtect component (CWE-416). A remote attacker can execute arbitrary code inside the browser sandbox by luring a user to a crafted HTML page. Exploitation requires that the user visits the page, and no privileges are needed. Chromium-based browsers such as Microsoft Edge may be affected as well.
Affected
- Google Chrome prior to 156.0.8078.47 (CVE record; the per-platform range for Windows and macOS is not confirmed)
- Android Chrome builds prior to 156.0.8078.47 (secondary source)
- Microsoft Edge prior to 156.0.4314.42 (Hong Kong CERT bulletin, not verified)
Fixed in
- Chrome 156.0.8078.47 or later (Linux, Android)
- Chrome 156.0.8078.48 or later recommended for Windows and macOS
- Microsoft Edge 156.0.4314.42 or later (to be confirmed against the MSRC entry)
Workaround
Unknown. No vendor-documented workaround is known. Apply the update.
Exploitation
- No known exploitation in the wild reported at the time of research.
- No public proof of concept found.
- CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable no, technical impact total.
- Chromium rates the bug Low severity; the CVSS base score is 8.8.
Our recommendation
- Check Chrome and Edge versions on all endpoints and update to the fixed builds.
- Restart browsers after the update so the new version is running.
- Enforce updates via endpoint management or browser policies, and report non-compliant devices.
- Monitor for reports of exploitation and patch within the normal cycle.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
