Linux kernel: Double-free in Nouveau driver (nvif_vmm_dtor)
Summary
The Nouveau DRM driver of the Linux kernel frees a memory pointer twice when client initialization fails and the cleanup path runs again. A local user who can open a DRM device node can trigger this double-free in kernel memory. This can lead to a kernel crash or possibly privilege escalation on multi-user systems; the vendor scores differ (6.2 to 7.8), and the CVSS 7.8 in the ticket could not be confirmed.
Affected
- Linux kernel from commit 20d8a88e557aae5264e793f4626c45cd644c7144 (version 4.11) until the fixed stable releases below
- Unknown whether the open ranges (for example 7.3 and later) are affected; verify against the kernel git history
Fixed in
- 5.10.271
- 5.15.222
- 6.1.189
- 6.6.158
- 6.12.112
- 6.18.55
- 7.2.9
- Other branches: see the fixed stable commits in the sources
- Distribution kernel fix status: Unknown
Workaround
- No vendor workaround known
- Analyst suggestion (not from a source): on systems that do not need Nouveau, blacklisting the nouveau module reduces exposure until the kernel is patched; test first, as it affects graphics
Exploitation
- Known exploitation: none
- Public proof of concept: none found; the crash report in the CVE text comes from fuzzing
- EPSS: 0.0021
Our recommendation
- Install the kernel update from your distribution as soon as it is available, with the next regular maintenance window
- Prioritize Linux workstations with NVIDIA GPUs using Nouveau, and multi-user or shared hosts
- Check which hosts use the nouveau module and which local users have access
- Monitor vendor advisories for your distribution kernel
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.

Original description (NVD)
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/nouveau: fix double-free in nvif_vmm_dtor On failure, nouveau_cli_init() calls nouveau_cli_fini() to tear the client down. Then, nouveau_drm_open() also enters into its cleanup path and calls nouveau_cli_fini() AGAIN. nouveau_cli_fini() calls nouveau_vmm_fini(): void nouveau_vmm_fini(struct nouveau_vmm *vmm) { nouveau_svmm_fini(&vmm->svmm); nvif_vmm_dtor(&vmm->vmm); vmm->cli = NULL; } Inside nvif_vmm_dtor(), vmm->page is freed unconditionally: void nvif_vmm_dtor(struct nvif_vmm *vmm) { kfree(vmm->page); nvif_object_dtor(&vmm->object); } vmm->page is never cleared after being freed, so the second call of nvif_vmm_dtor() will cause a double-free.
