Microsoft Windows 10 1607: Elevation of privilege in WebDAV

CVE-2026-96847High 7.8

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

A flaw in the WebDAV component of Windows 10 Version 1607 and Windows Server 2016 allows an attacker to elevate privileges on the local system. The bug is an untrusted pointer dereference (CWE-822). An attacker needs a valid low-privileged account or code running on the machine, and no user interaction is required. The impact is rated high for confidentiality, integrity and availability.

Affected

  • Windows 10 Version 1607: builds 10.0.14393.0 before 10.0.14393.9612
  • Windows Server 2016 (same build line): builds 10.0.14393.0 before 10.0.14393.9612

Fixed in

  • Build 10.0.14393.9612 or later, included in Microsoft's October 2026 cumulative update
  • Third-party sources list this update as KB5126868; confirm the KB number on the MSRC page before rollout

Workaround

Unknown. No Microsoft-documented workaround was found; the security update is the fix.

Exploitation

  • Not listed in the CISA KEV catalogue
  • CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable no
  • EPSS about 0.3%
  • No public proof of concept found in our research; this does not prove that none exists
  • No known exploitation in the wild

Our recommendation

  • Identify all Windows 10 1607 and Windows Server 2016 hosts
  • Install the October 2026 cumulative update and confirm build 10.0.14393.9612 or later
  • Prioritise multi-user systems, terminal servers and file servers
  • Check whether these older releases still receive security updates before relying on the patch
  • Install the complete cumulative update, as it also fixes other Windows 1607 flaws such as CVE-2026-96846
