Microsoft Windows: Local privilege escalation via heap overflow in Resume

CVE-2026-96318High 7.8

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

A heap-based buffer overflow in the Windows Resume component allows an authorized local attacker to elevate privileges. The attacker needs an existing local account with low privileges, so the flaw is not directly reachable from the internet. Microsoft rates the impact as high for confidentiality, integrity and availability (CVSS 3.1: 7.8).

Affected

  • Windows 10 Version 1607 (10.0.14393.0 to below 10.0.14393.9612)

  • Windows 10 Version 21H2 (10.0.19044.0 to below 10.0.19044.7807)
  • Windows 10 Version 22H2 (10.0.19045.0 to below 10.0.19045.7807)
  • Windows 11 Version 23H2 (10.0.22631.0 to below 10.0.22631.7652)
  • Windows 11 Version 24H2 (10.0.26100.0 to below 10.0.26100.9711)

  • Windows 11 Version 26H1 (10.0.28000.0 to below 10.0.28000.3231)
  • Windows 11 Version 26H2 (10.0.26300.0 to below 10.0.26300.9711)
  • Windows Server 2012 incl. Server Core (6.2.9200.0 to below 6.2.9200.26434)
  • Windows Server 2012 R2 incl. Server Core (6.3.9600.0 to below 6.3.9600.23470)
  • Windows Server 2016 (10.0.14393.0 to below 10.0.14393.9612)

Fixed in

  • Per the CVE record, the fixed builds are the versions listed as the upper bounds above, for example 10.0.14393.9612 for Windows 10 1607 and Windows Server 2016.
  • KB article numbers: Unknown. Confirm in the Microsoft Security Update Guide.

Workaround

  • Unknown. No interim mitigation from Microsoft was found.

Exploitation

  • No evidence of exploitation in the wild found. CISA SSVC: exploitation none, not automatable, total technical impact.
  • No public proof of concept found.
  • Not listed in the CISA KEV catalog as far as found.

Our recommendation

  • Install the Microsoft security update for each affected Windows version as soon as possible.
  • Check whether any Windows 10 1607 or Windows Server 2012 systems are still in use and whether Microsoft still provides updates for them; if not, plan an upgrade or isolation.
  • Limit local logons on shared workstations and terminal servers and review local accounts.
  • Monitor for unexpected privilege changes and new local administrator accounts.
  • Priority: medium for typical fleets; higher for unsupported systems, shared machines and multi-user servers.
