Apache Thrift: Uncaught exception in Perl bindings causes denial of service

CVE-2026-96286High 8.2

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

Apache Thrift's Perl bindings contain an uncaught exception. When a single connection fails, the Perl server ends its serve() loop. A remote attacker can trigger this without authentication or user interaction, causing a denial of service. Exposure applies to Perl Thrift servers reachable over the network.

Affected

  • Apache Thrift before 0.25.0, Perl bindings
  • Distribution builds of perl-thrift below the fixed version (Azure Linux: below 0.25.0-1)

Fixed in

  • Apache Thrift 0.25.0, which also fixes several other issues in the language bindings
  • Red Hat: perl-thrift 0.25.0-0.1.hum1

Workaround

  • Unknown: no vendor workaround documented.
  • Until patched, restrict network access to the Thrift service port.
  • Run Perl Thrift servers under a supervisor that restarts them after a failure.

Exploitation

  • Not listed in CISA KEV.
  • No public exploit or proof of concept known.
  • EPSS: 0.00426 (low).
  • CISA SSVC: exploitation none, not automatable.

Our recommendation

  • Check whether Perl Thrift servers or perl-thrift packages are in use.
  • Upgrade to Apache Thrift 0.25.0 or a vendor build with the fix during regular maintenance.
  • Escalate if the service is internet-facing or business-critical.
  • Monitor the service for crashes or restarts.

Public exploits

PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
