thefuck: Arbitrary code execution via third-party rule loading

CVE-2026-95168High 7.8

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

thefuck, a command-line tool that corrects previous console commands, loads third-party rule packages named thefuck_contrib_* from every sys.path entry. Their module code is executed before any enable/disable setting is applied, so a local user who can write to a Python path directory used by another user's interpreter can run code in that user's thefuck invocation. The attack requires local access and write permissions on a shared site-packages directory or virtualenv; no network exposure is known.

Affected

  • thefuck 3.32
  • Other versions: Unknown.

Fixed in

Unknown. No vendor fix or release was confirmed at the time of writing; check nvbn/thefuck#1623 for a fix.

Workaround

  • Run thefuck only on single-user systems or with least-privilege accounts.
  • Do not install or run it from directories writable by other users.
  • Remove thefuck from shared virtualenvs and multi-user hosts where it is not needed.
  • Check site-packages for unexpected thefuck_contrib_* directories.

Exploitation

  • Public proof of concept available (CISA SSVC: Exploitation poc, Automatable no).
  • No in-the-wild exploitation known.
  • Not listed in CISA KEV.

Our recommendation

  • Inventory thefuck installations (e.g. pip show thefuck, apt list --installed | grep thefuck).
  • Remove thefuck where unused, especially on shared servers, jump hosts and multi-user workstations.
  • Restrict write access to Python site-packages and virtualenvs to the owning user.
  • Check for unexpected thefuck_contrib_* packages.
  • Install a fixed version once published; monitor nvbn/thefuck#1623. Priority: low to medium.

Public exploits

PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
