Apache Thrift: Stack-based buffer overflow in C++ THeaderProtocol

CVE-2026-93925High 8.7

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

Apache Thrift's C++ THeaderProtocol contains a stack-based buffer overflow in writeVarint32(), caused by an incorrect bitwise shift. A remote attacker can trigger it by sending crafted THeader-framed input, which can crash the affected service (denial of service). Exposure is indirect: the risk applies to software that embeds the Thrift C++ library and processes such network input.

Affected

  • Apache Thrift C++ (libthrift) versions before 0.25.0
  • Software that bundles or links an affected libthrift version

Fixed in

  • Apache Thrift 0.25.0
  • Vendor or distribution builds that include the fix (for example openSUSE and Red Hat packages, per the sources)

Workaround

Unknown.

Exploitation

  • No evidence of exploitation in the wild found.
  • No public proof-of-concept code found.
  • CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable yes, technical impact partial.
  • EPSS 0.0046 (low).

Our recommendation

  • Check whether you run software that uses Apache Thrift C++ (libthrift), especially services that accept THeader-framed network input.
  • Ask your software vendors for a version that includes the fix, or upgrade to Apache Thrift 0.25.0 or later where you build it yourself.
  • Until patched, restrict network access to affected services.
  • Monitor vendor advisories for products that bundle libthrift.

Public exploits

PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
