Oracle Solaris: Privilege escalation via improper privilege management

CVE-2026-91348High 8.4

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

Oracle Solaris 11.3 and 11.4 are affected by a vulnerability in the Utility component (CWE-269, improper privilege management). According to the CNA record, an attacker who can reach the system can take over Solaris, with high impact on confidentiality, integrity and availability. The description requires a local logon, while the CVSS vector lists no privileges required, so the exact preconditions should be confirmed with Oracle.

Affected

  • Oracle Solaris 11.3
  • Oracle Solaris 11.4

Fixed in

  • Solaris 11.4: Unknown whether SRU 96 (20 October 2026, Critical Patch Update) fixes this CVE; verification required.
  • Solaris 11.3: Unknown.

Workaround

Unknown.

Exploitation

  • Not known to be exploited in the wild; not listed in CISA KEV as of 21 October 2026 according to third-party sources.
  • No public proof-of-concept found in the sources checked.
  • CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable no, technical impact total.
  • EPSS 0.00129 (low predicted exploitation probability).

Our recommendation

  • Check your asset inventory for Oracle Solaris hosts. If none exist, this CVE has no impact on your environment.
  • For Solaris 11.4 hosts: verify in Oracle's October 2026 advisory and My Oracle Support KB631614 that SRU 96 covers this CVE, then apply it via pkg update.
  • For Solaris 11.3 hosts: obtain the fix status from Oracle via My Oracle Support and apply it as soon as it is available.
  • Until patched, restrict local logon accounts and limit who can log in to affected hosts.
  • Monitor for unexpected privilege changes and new local accounts.
  • Recheck the CISA KEV catalogue before the next review.

Public exploits

PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
