Siemens RUGGEDCOM CROSSBOW: SQL injection in notification profile values
Summary
RUGGEDCOM CROSSBOW, a secure access management solution for NERC CIP compliant access to Intelligent Electronic Devices, does not properly validate input in the Value field of notification conditions. An authenticated attacker with specific privileges can execute arbitrary SQL commands on the underlying database. Siemens rates the CVSS 4.0 base score at 8.7 and the CVSS 3.1 base score at 8.8, and the NVD record is still awaiting analysis.
Affected
- RUGGEDCOM CROSSBOW, all versions below V6.0
Fixed in
- Update to V6.0 or later (Siemens advisory SSA-508506)
Workaround
- No vendor workaround known. Siemens recommends the update.
- Interim measures (not from the vendor): restrict network access to the CROSSBOW management interface and review which accounts can edit notification profiles.
Exploitation
- No public exploit known. VulDB reports technical details are known but no exploit is available.
- Not listed as exploited in the sources checked. CISA SSVC assessment: exploitation none, automatable no.
Our recommendation
- If you run RUGGEDCOM CROSSBOW, update to V6.0 or later.
- Until patched, limit access to the management interface and restrict notification profile rights to necessary accounts.
- Review database and application logs for unusual SQL syntax in notification values.
- If you do not run this product, no action is needed beyond asset inventory.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.

Original description (NVD)
A vulnerability has been identified in RUGGEDCOM CROSSBOW (All versions < V6.0). Affected devices do not properly validate or sanitize input in the Value field of notification conditions processed during the Notification Profile configuration. This could allow an authenticated attacker with specific privileges to execute arbitrary SQL commands on the underlying database.
