Microsoft Windows DWM Core Library: Out-of-bounds read in local privilege escalation

CVE-2026-88189High 7.8

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

The Windows Desktop Window Manager (DWM) Core Library contains an out-of-bounds read (CWE-125). A local user with existing low-privilege access can exploit it to elevate privileges to a higher level, with high impact on confidentiality, integrity and availability. The attack is not remote. It matters most after another compromise, such as phishing or malware, and on multi-user systems such as terminal or RDS servers.

Affected

  • Windows 10 Version 1809 and Windows Server 2019 (incl. Server Core): 10.0.17763.0 to before 10.0.17763.9376
  • Windows 10 Version 21H2: 10.0.19044.0 to before 10.0.19044.7807
  • Windows 10 Version 22H2: range listed by the CNA is inconsistent, exact build unknown
  • Windows 11 Version 23H2: 10.0.22631.0 to before 10.0.22631.7652
  • Windows 11 Version 24H2: 10.0.26100.0 to before 10.0.26100.9711
  • Windows 11 Version 25H2: 10.0.26200.0 to before 10.0.26200.9711
  • Windows 11 Version 26H2: 10.0.26300.0 to before 10.0.26300.9711
  • Windows Server 2022: 10.0.20348.0 to before 10.0.20348.5761
  • Windows Server 2025 (incl. Server Core): 10.0.26100.0 to before 10.0.26100.33650
  • Note: the NVD CPE lists only Windows 10 1809; the CNA record lists the products above. Verify on MSRC.

Fixed in

  • Windows 10 1809 and Server 2019: 10.0.17763.9376 or later
  • Windows 10 21H2: 10.0.19044.7807 or later
  • Windows 10 22H2: Unknown.
  • Windows 11 23H2: 10.0.22631.7652 or later
  • Windows 11 24H2: 10.0.26100.9711 or later
  • Windows 11 25H2: 10.0.26200.9711 or later
  • Windows 11 26H2: 10.0.26300.9711 or later
  • Windows Server 2022: 10.0.20348.5761 or later
  • Windows Server 2025: 10.0.26100.33650 or later
  • The KB numbers are unknown and must be confirmed on MSRC.

Workaround

None documented.

Exploitation

  • No public proof of concept known.
  • No evidence of exploitation in the wild found. Not listed in CISA KEV according to VulDB.
  • CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable no, technical impact total.

Our recommendation

  • Install the October 2026 security update on all affected Windows 10, Windows 11 and Windows Server systems. Confirm the exact build and KB number on MSRC first.
  • Prioritise multi-user systems, RDS and terminal servers, shared workstations and older Windows 10 1809 hosts. Check their support status and whether Extended Security Updates apply.
  • Limit local logon rights and remove unnecessary local accounts.
  • Monitor MSRC and CISA for changes in exploitation status.
