Microsoft Azure Storage Library: Injection leading to unauthorized deletion

CVE-2026-88094High 8.1

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

The Azure Storage Blobs client library for Java and the azure-storage-blob-batch library do not properly neutralize special elements in values used by a downstream component. An authenticated attacker who can supply a blob tag condition to an application using the affected library can add unauthorized deletion options to a permitted storage operation, so that recovery snapshots or blobs are deleted even though the application did not intend this. The attack requires network access and low privileges, and no user interaction; the library itself opens no listening service.

Affected

  • azure-storage-blob-batch: 1.0.0 to before 12.31.2
  • Azure Storage Blobs client library for Java: version range unknown (not specified by the vendor)

Fixed in

  • Fixed version: Unknown. Check the MSRC advisory for the current Security Update for azure-storage-blob-batch and the Java client library.

Workaround

  • No vendor workaround published.
  • Limit user input that can reach blob tag conditions and blob delete options in your applications (own recommendation, not a vendor statement).

Exploitation

  • Public proof-of-concept: none found.
  • Exploited in the wild: no evidence found.
  • Not listed in the CISA KEV catalog.
  • CISA SSVC: Exploitation none, Automatable no, Technical Impact total.
  • MSRC temporal score uses exploit maturity Unproven (E:U).

Our recommendation

  • Inventory Java applications and dependencies for azure-storage-blob and azure-storage-blob-batch.
  • Check the MSRC advisory and update both libraries to the latest release as soon as a fixed version is confirmed.
  • Until then, validate or restrict user input used in blob tag conditions and delete options.
  • Priority: medium for SMEs with custom Java/Azure applications; low if no software is built on these SDKs.

Original description (NVD)

Improper neutralization of special elements in output used by a downstream component ('injection') in Azure Storage Library allows an authorized attacker to elevate privileges over a network.
