Koinonia Link WordPress plugin: Privilege escalation to Administrator

CVE-2026-87782High 8.8

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

The Koinonia Link WordPress plugin before version 1.1.5 does not check whether a user is allowed to change roles when saving a role selection from a profile update. Any authenticated user, such as a subscriber, can therefore grant themselves the Administrator role. The attack requires only a valid low-privilege account on the site and no user interaction.

Affected

  • Koinonia Link 1.1.2 to 1.1.4
  • Versions before 1.1.5 are described as affected in the CVE record; whether 1.1.0 and 1.1.1 are affected is unknown.

Fixed in

  • Koinonia Link 1.1.5

Workaround

  • No vendor workaround documented. Unknown.
  • Interim measures based on general WordPress practice: disable or restrict public user registration, limit access to the profile screen for low-privilege roles, and review recently created administrator accounts.

Exploitation

  • No known exploitation in the wild; not listed in CISA KEV at the time of research.
  • No public proof of concept confirmed.
  • EPSS score reported by a third party: 0.23%.
  • CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable no, technical impact total.

Our recommendation

  • Update Koinonia Link to version 1.1.5 or later on all WordPress sites, with priority for internet-facing sites.
  • Review all administrator accounts for unexpected additions.
  • Check logs for user role changes since the plugin was installed.
  • Restrict or disable open self-registration where it is not required.
  • Monitor for a CISA KEV entry or public proof of concept.

Public exploits

PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
