Google Chrome: Out-of-bounds write in V8 engine allows code execution
Deadline for US federal agencies: 23 Sep 2026
Summary
An out-of-bounds write in the V8 JavaScript and WebAssembly engine of Google Chrome before 153.0.8010.36 can be triggered by a crafted HTML page. A remote attacker can use it to execute arbitrary code inside the browser sandbox. The victim must visit the crafted page, and Google has confirmed that an exploit exists in the wild.
Affected
- Google Chrome prior to 153.0.8010.36
- Other Chromium-based browsers: Unknown
Fixed in
- Google Chrome 153.0.8010.36 (Linux)
- Google Chrome 153.0.8010.36/.37 (Windows and macOS, according to secondary reports)
- Extended Stable channel: Unknown
Workaround
Unknown. No workaround is documented. The update is the only mitigation.
Exploitation
- Exploit in the wild: confirmed by Google.
- CISA KEV: added 9 Sep 2026, due 23 Sep 2026.
- Public proof-of-concept: conflicting reports, unconfirmed.
- Attribution to TA412 (APT31) comes from a single third-party source and is not confirmed by Google.
- Reported by Jihyeon Jeong of Compsec Lab, Seoul National University.
Our recommendation
- Update Google Chrome to 153.0.8010.36 or later immediately, and install newer builds when available.
- Verify the installed version on all managed devices, including those on the Extended Stable channel.
- Restart the browser after the update.
- Check other Chromium-based browsers for vendor fixes.
- Monitor for unexpected browser crashes or suspicious activity, and treat this as a priority item.
Public exploits
Links to third-party sites, not checked by us – exploit code can contain malware. Only use it in isolated test environments.

Original description (NVD)
Out of bounds write in V8 in Google Chrome prior to 153.0.8010.36 allowed a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code inside the sandbox via a crafted HTML page. (Chromium security severity: Medium)
Required action (CISA)
Apply mitigations in accordance with vendor instructions, ensuring compliance with CISA’s BOD 26-04 Prioritizing Security Updates Based on Risk (see URL in Notes) guidance and CISA’s “Forensics Triage Requirements” (see URL in Notes). Follow applicable BOD 26-04 guidance for cloud services or discontinue use of the product if mitigations are unavailable. Stakeholders are responsible for evaluating each asset's internet exposure and ensuring adherence to BOD 26-04 patching guidelines.
