Oracle Outside In Technology: Remote takeover via crafted file processing
Summary
Oracle Outside In Technology, a suite of SDKs for file viewing, conversion and text extraction embedded in other enterprise applications, is affected in version 8.5.8 according to the CVE record. An unauthenticated remote attacker can send crafted content over HTTP, and successful attacks can result in takeover of the component. Exploitation requires a user to take an action, such as opening or processing a crafted file.
Affected
- Oracle Outside In Technology 8.5.8 (as listed in Oracle's CNA record)
- Applications that embed or bundle Outside In 8.5.8 (versions depend on the vendor)
Fixed in
Unknown. Check Oracle's October 2026 Critical Patch Update advisory (https://www.oracle.com/security-alerts/cpuoct2026.html) for the fixed build.
Workaround
- No workaround is documented in the CVE record.
- Until patched, limit HTTP exposure of applications that embed Outside In.
- Restrict which file types these applications process.
- Confirm any measures with Oracle or the software vendor.
Exploitation
- Known exploitation: none found.
- Not listed in the CISA KEV catalog; EPSS very low (under 1%).
- Public proof of concept: not known. This does not confirm that none exists.
- CISA SSVC: Automatable: no, Technical Impact: total.
Our recommendation
- Identify applications in your environment that use Outside In, including vendor products with document handling.
- Obtain the fixed version from Oracle's October 2026 advisory or from the vendor of the embedding application.
- Patch, prioritising internet-facing and file-processing systems, and make sure embedded copies are updated too.
- Monitor NVD and CISA KEV for changes, as the NVD status was still Awaiting Analysis.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
