Apple Xcode: Sandbox escape via missing library validation

CVE-2026-86948High 8.8

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

Apple Xcode, the development toolchain for Apple platforms, contains a flaw that allows an app to break out of its sandbox. Apple fixed the issue by enforcing library validation on the affected binaries. Exploitation requires a malicious app already running locally on the Mac, so the risk is mainly relevant to organisations that build software on Macs.

Affected

  • Apple Xcode versions before 27 (per CVE record)
  • Apple advisory lists Xcode for macOS Tahoe 26.6 and later
  • Exact point releases and build numbers: Unknown.

Fixed in

  • Xcode 27 (released September 14, 2026)

Workaround

Unknown. No workaround is provided by Apple or the CVE record.

Exploitation

  • Exploitation in the wild: Not known.
  • CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable no.
  • Public proof of concept: None found in limited research.
  • Attack vector: local.

Our recommendation

  • Update Xcode to version 27 or later on all developer Macs.
  • Inventory Macs with Xcode installed and prioritise development teams.
  • Limit installation of unvetted apps on developer Macs as a general interim measure.
  • Monitor vendor advisories for further updates.

Public exploits

PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
