Apache Thrift D bindings: Denial of service via truncated HTTP request
Summary
The D language bindings of Apache Thrift contain several flaws, including an uncaught exception, an infinite loop and an integer underflow. A truncated HTTP request stops the server of the D library, which allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to cause a denial of service. The issue only matters where a Thrift server written with the D bindings is reachable from untrusted networks.
Affected
- Apache Thrift D language bindings, versions before 0.25.0 (per the Apache CVE record: affected 0 to < 0.25.0)
Fixed in
- Upgrade to Apache Thrift 0.25.0 (released 2026-09-30)
- Distribution packages: check your vendor's tracker, as fixed package versions were not confirmed for all distributions
Workaround
- Unknown from the vendor.
- Generic option (not from the vendor, not tested): filter malformed or excessively truncated HTTP requests at a reverse proxy or firewall, e.g. by limiting request size and validating HTTP syntax, before they reach the Thrift server
Exploitation
- CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable yes, technical impact partial
- No known exploitation in the wild found in the research
- No public proof of concept found (this does not prove that none exists)
- EPSS 0.00553 (Tenable)
- CISA KEV status not checked
Our recommendation
- Inventory applications that use Thrift D bindings, including vendor software that bundles them, and ask vendors for their status
- Upgrade to Apache Thrift 0.25.0 where possible; this release also fixes related D issues such as CVE-2026-85494
- If an upgrade is not possible soon, restrict network access to the Thrift service and filter truncated HTTP requests at a reverse proxy or firewall
- Monitor for service crashes or hangs of Thrift servers
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
