Freeton WP: Unauthenticated account takeover via activation code validation flaw

CVE-2026-84737Critical 9.8

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

The Freeton WP WordPress plugin up to and including version 1.0.0 does not correctly validate the activation code during user authentication. An unauthenticated attacker who knows the email address of a user can log in as that user, including administrators. This gives full control over the affected WordPress site, including content changes and malware placement.

Affected

  • Freeton WP plugin (slug freeton-wp), versions 0 to 1.0.0
  • Vendor: Unknown

Fixed in

  • Conflicting information. Positive Technologies lists 1.0.1 as fixed, but WPScan shows "No known fix" and no 1.0.1 release was found. Treat as unconfirmed.

Workaround

  • No vendor-published workaround.
  • Deactivate and remove the plugin if it is not essential.
  • No confirmed virtual patch or WAF rule was found.

Exploitation

  • Exploitation in the wild: Not known. Not listed in CISA KEV.
  • Public proof of concept: Unclear. VulDB states no exploit is available.
  • CISA SSVC: automatable yes, technical impact total.

Our recommendation

  • Check all WordPress sites for the Freeton WP plugin, including inactive installations.
  • Remove the plugin if it is not required, or restrict access to it.
  • Review administrator accounts and recent logins for unknown users or sessions, and reset administrator passwords.
  • Check the plugin's WordPress.org or vendor page for version 1.0.1 and its changelog.
  • Monitor logs for logins without a valid activation code.

Public exploits

PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
