Apache Thrift: Excessive memory allocation from unbounded container element count

CVE-2026-82458High 8.7

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

Apache Thrift is a cross-language RPC and serialization library used in many applications. In affected versions, the container element count is not checked against the bytes available, so a crafted message can trigger excessive memory allocation and make the affected application unavailable. The issue is reachable over the network without privileges or user interaction, but only where an application exposes a Thrift endpoint to untrusted networks. Most SMEs will meet Thrift indirectly as a dependency of other software.

Affected

  • Apache Thrift before 0.25.0, in the language bindings Go, .NET, OCaml, Erlang, Java ME, Rust, C++, Java, Kotlin and D
  • Downstream software that bundles a vulnerable Thrift version, for example packages still at 0.24.0 or 0.22.0

Fixed in

  • Apache Thrift 0.25.0 (0.24.0 is not sufficient according to downstream reports)

Workaround

Unknown. No vendor-documented workaround was found; upgrading to 0.25.0 is the only remedy in the sources.

Exploitation

  • No reports of exploitation in the wild are known.
  • No public proof of concept is known.
  • CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable yes, technical impact partial.

Our recommendation

  • Identify all systems and applications that use Apache Thrift, including transitive dependencies, using SBOM or dependency scanning.
  • Upgrade Thrift to 0.25.0 and rebuild or redeploy the applications that bundle it.
  • Until patched, restrict access to Thrift endpoints to trusted networks.
  • Monitor for abnormal memory usage and service crashes on affected services.

Public exploits

PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
