HPE ArubaOS AOS-8: Unauthenticated buffer overflow leads to remote code execution

CVE-2026-79859Critical 9.8

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

A buffer overflow in an unnamed interface of HPE ArubaOS AOS-8 can be triggered without authentication over the network. A successful attacker could execute arbitrary code with privileged rights on the underlying operating system of the controller or access point. The CNA rates the issue CVSS 3.1 9.8 (Critical); exposure depends on where the management plane is reachable, not only on internet exposure.

Affected

  • AOS-8.13.x: 8.13.0.0 to 8.13.3.0
  • AOS-8.10.x: 8.10.0.0 to 8.10.0.23
  • Unverified: 8.12.x may be affected (sources conflict)
  • Unknown: the specific affected interface or service

Fixed in

  • AOS-8.13.3.1 or later (per secondary reporting, to be confirmed with HPE)
  • AOS-8.10.0.24 or later (per secondary reporting, to be confirmed with HPE)

Workaround

  • No workaround is needed if you can patch; patching is the fix.
  • Interim: restrict access to the management interface to a dedicated admin segment, as recommended in HPE advisory HPESBNW05162.

Exploitation

  • HPE reports no known public exploit code and no in-the-wild exploitation.
  • Not listed in CISA KEV as of 24 October 2026.
  • Status as of 30 October 2026; recheck CISA KEV and the HPE advisory.

Our recommendation

  • Identify all AOS-8 Mobility Controllers, Conductors and Instant APs in your inventory (AOS-10 has different fixed versions).
  • Patch affected AOS-8 devices on 8.13.x or 8.10.x quickly; upgrade Conductors and controllers first, then access points, in a maintenance window.
  • Restrict management access to a dedicated admin segment now.
  • Confirm affected versions, including 8.12.x, against the HPE advisory before planning the rollout.
  • Monitor for vendor updates and KEV listing.

Public exploits

PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.

Research sources

Original description (NVD)

Buffer overflow vulnerabilities exist in the affected interface of AOS-8 that could lead to unauthenticated remote code execution. Successful exploitation could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code as a privileged user on the underlying operating system.
