Redash: Arbitrary file read and write through DuckDB query runner
Summary
Redash, an open-source tool for data visualization and sharing, does not disable external access in the DuckDB query runner by default. A user with query access to a DuckDB data source created by an administrator can use native file-reading functions to read files the Redash process can access, or use COPY TO to write files with its privileges. Reading application secrets such as REDASH_COOKIE_SECRET or REDASH_SECRET_KEY could also enable forged sessions and authentication bypass.
Affected
- Redash versions from 26.0.0 up to, but not including, 26.9.0
- Sources conflict on the start of the range: the CNA record says 26.0.0, while OSV marks all earlier commits as affected. Treat all versions before 26.9.0 as affected.
Fixed in
- Fixed in Redash 26.9.0
- Fix commit: 7387072af40913a64e7b3be470491792f2d5551c
Workaround
- Unknown. The vendor does not describe a workaround for affected versions.
- Interim measure (not from the vendor): remove or restrict DuckDB data sources and limit query access to trusted administrators.
Exploitation
- CISA SSVC lists exploitation as PoC and automatable as no.
- No evidence of exploitation in the wild was found. The CISA KEV catalogue was not checked directly.
- EPSS is low (0.00525 in one source).
Our recommendation
- Upgrade all Redash instances to version 26.9.0 or later, starting with shared installations.
- Identify all Redash instances and their versions, and check whether they are reachable from the internet.
- Until patched, restrict DuckDB data sources and query access to trusted users.
- After patching, rotate REDASH_SECRET_KEY and REDASH_COOKIE_SECRET if exposure before the update cannot be ruled out.
- The vendor rates this advisory as Medium, while the CNA score is 9.3. Prioritise the patch anyway, because low-privilege users can reach server files and secrets.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.

Original description (NVD)
Redash is a package for data visualization and sharing. From 26.0.0 until 26.9.0, the DuckDB query runner's _connect() path in redash/query_runner/duckdb.py created connections with enable_external_access left at its default value of true. A user with query access to an administrator-created DuckDB data source could use native file-reading functions to retrieve files readable by the Redash process or use COPY TO to write files with that process's privileges. Reading application secrets such as REDASH_COOKIE_SECRET or REDASH_SECRET_KEY could also enable forged sessions and authentication bypass. This issue is fixed in version 26.9.0.
