NLnet Labs Routinator: Incorrect handling of RRDP delta updates
Summary
Routinator, an RPKI validator used for BGP route origin validation, accepts RRDP notification files that contain gaps in their delta entries. This can lead to missing validation data. A very large number of delta entries can exhaust the available memory and crash the process. The vendor describes the impact as availability-focused, and an attacker needs no privileges or user interaction, but the input comes from RPKI repositories the validator is configured to fetch from.
Affected
- Routinator up to and including 0.15.2 (vendor advisory)
- The CNA record lists the unaffected range as 0.15.3 and later; the affected range below 0.15.3 is not fully confirmed, and one third-party source lists all versions.
Fixed in
- Routinator 0.15.3 (released 2026-10-26) and all later versions
Workaround
- Unknown. No vendor-documented workaround is available.
- Until the update is possible, limit the RRDP sources the validator trusts and monitor for abnormal memory use and crashes (own suggestion, not vendor guidance).
Exploitation
- Not known to be exploited.
- CISA SSVC: Exploitation none, automatable yes, technical impact partial.
- No public proof of concept found.
Our recommendation
- If Routinator is in use, update to version 0.15.3 or later and confirm the installed version.
- Review which RRDP sources the validator fetches from.
- Monitor the validator for memory exhaustion and crashes.
- If Routinator is not used, no action is needed beyond awareness.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.

Original description (NVD)
When Routinator encounters an RRDP notification file with gaps in the delta entries, it is still accepted and parsed, potentially leading to missing data. If it encounters too many delta entries it may run out of memory.
