Windows 10 1607: Heap-based buffer overflow in OLE DB (privilege escalation)

CVE-2026-70210High 8.8

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

Windows OLE DB, the Windows data-access component, contains a heap-based buffer overflow in Windows 10 Version 1607 and Windows Server 2016. According to the CVE record, an unauthorized attacker can elevate privileges over a network. The CVSS vector requires user interaction (UI:R), and Microsoft does not describe the exact preconditions. Microsoft reports no public disclosure and no known exploitation.

Affected

  • Windows 10 Version 1607 (Enterprise LTSB 2016): builds before 10.0.14393.9612
  • Windows Server 2016: builds before 10.0.14393.9612
  • Microsoft also lists other Windows 10, Windows 11 and Windows Server versions as affected (see MSRC advisory)

Fixed in

  • Build 10.0.14393.9612 or later for Windows 10 1607 and Windows Server 2016
  • KB article number: Unknown.

Workaround

Unknown. No workaround or mitigation was found in the sources reviewed.

Exploitation

  • Publicly disclosed: No
  • Exploited: No
  • Microsoft exploitability assessment: Exploitation Less Likely
  • EPSS score: about 0.009
  • CISA SSVC: exploitation none, not automatable, total technical impact

Our recommendation

  • Check whether any device runs Windows 10 1607 or Windows Server 2016. Support for 1607 ended on 13 Oct 2026, so security updates are only available with ESU enrolment.
  • Decide between migrating to a supported Windows version and ESU enrolment, and confirm the ESU status of each device.
  • Install build 10.0.14393.9612 or later on devices covered by ESU. Verify the build number on the MSRC page first.
  • Where patching is not possible, reduce local accounts, enforce least privilege and segment legacy machines from the internet and general user networks.
  • Monitor kiosk, POS, HMI and line-of-business machines on 1607 closely, as they often have weak oversight.
