Apache Thrift PHP bindings: Stack-based buffer overflow via integer overflow

CVE-2026-66837High 8.7

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

The PHP bindings of Apache Thrift before 0.25.0 contain a stack-based buffer overflow caused by an integer overflow when a string length from the network is used to size a stack buffer. A remote, unauthenticated attacker can send a crafted request to a Thrift service, which can crash the service. Exposure depends on whether a PHP application uses Thrift and accepts Thrift traffic from untrusted networks.

Affected

  • Apache Thrift PHP bindings (Composer package apache/thrift) before 0.25.0
  • Distribution packages: affected versions vary, check your distribution tracker

Fixed in

  • Apache Thrift 0.25.0 or later
  • Fixed distribution package versions: Unknown.

Workaround

  • No vendor-documented workaround. The vendor recommends upgrading.
  • Restrict network access to any Thrift endpoint so that only trusted clients can reach it until patched.

Exploitation

  • No public exploit or proof of concept known.
  • Not listed in CISA KEV; no known in-the-wild exploitation.
  • CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable yes, technical impact partial.

Our recommendation

  • Check whether any system runs Thrift PHP (Composer apache/thrift or distribution package php-thrift) and which version.
  • Upgrade to Apache Thrift 0.25.0 or later, or install the distribution's fixed package once available.
  • Restrict network access to Thrift services until patched.
  • Monitor the Apache thread and your distribution tracker for updates.

Public exploits

PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
