Homer: Authentication bypass in API due to empty JWT secret
Summary
Homer is open source software for capturing and monitoring SIP/VoIP signalling. Because the JWT secret defaults to an empty string, the JWT middleware accepts every request on the protected API paths /api/v1, /api/v3 and /api/v4 without authentication on a default installation. An unauthenticated attacker who can reach the API can read or change data, with no credentials or user interaction required.
Affected
- Homer versions prior to 11.0.283
- Default installations with no coordinator.jwt.secret configured
- Homer 7 (homer-app) is not confirmed as affected or unaffected by the vendor sources
Fixed in
- Homer 11.0.283 (enforces JWT on protected routes and auto-generates and persists a secret if none is set)
Workaround
Unknown. The vendor publishes no workaround. Until the update is applied, restrict access to the Homer API and UI to management networks only.
Exploitation
- No evidence of in-the-wild exploitation found; not listed in CISA KEV
- CISA SSVC assessment: exploitation PoC, automatable: yes, technical impact: total
- A third-party PoC description exists but has not been verified
Our recommendation
- Identify all Homer instances, including Homer 7 and container deployments, and record their versions
- Upgrade to Homer 11.0.283 or later and set an explicit JWT secret
- Remove direct internet exposure of the Homer API and UI
- Review web and access logs for unauthenticated requests to /api/ paths from unknown sources
- Rotate admin credentials and check the user list and database settings for unexpected changes
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.

Original description (NVD)
Homer is open source telecom observability software. Prior to version 11.0.283, both JWT middleware functions (`JWTMiddleware` and `JWTMiddlewareV4`) immediately return `next(c)` when `jwtSecret == ""`. The JWT secret defaults to an empty string. On a default installation, all protected API endpoints under `/api/v1`, `/api/v3`, and `/api/v4` are completely unauthenticated. Version 11.0.283 patches the issue.
