Gutentype WordPress theme: PHP Object Injection via untrusted data deserialization

CVE-2026-62046Critical 9.8

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

The Gutentype WordPress theme by ThemeREX Group, in versions up to and including 2.1.12, deserializes untrusted data, which allows PHP object injection. An unauthenticated remote attacker may be able to manipulate how the site processes data and run harmful actions on the server. Whether a usable gadget chain exists is not stated in the sources, so the CVSS score of 9.8 should be treated as the worst case.

Affected

  • Gutentype WordPress theme from n/a through 2.1.12 (lower bound unclear, assume all earlier versions are affected)

Fixed in

  • Unknown. No fixed version confirmed by the vendor or Patchstack.
  • Newer releases (2.1.13, 2.1.14) exist, but no source confirms they fix this issue.

Workaround

  • Unknown. No vendor or Patchstack workaround found.
  • Patchstack has issued a mitigation rule that blocks attacks until an official patch is available (per Patchstack's advisory, which you must use via their service).

Exploitation

  • No known exploitation in the wild found.
  • No public proof of concept found.
  • CISA SSVC assessment: Exploitation none, Automatable yes, Technical Impact total.
  • Patchstack states the flaw is expected to become exploited, but this is not evidence of exploitation.

Our recommendation

  • Identify every site running the Gutentype theme, including staging and forgotten sites, and record the installed version.
  • Restrict access to the admin area and to unneeded endpoints.
  • Keep WordPress core and all plugins up to date to reduce the risk of a usable gadget chain.
  • Deploy a virtual patch or mitigation rule via a WordPress security service if available.
  • Take a backup and plan to replace the theme if no fix is confirmed.
  • Check whether the site is already compromised.
  • Monitor the Patchstack entry and the vendor changelog for a fix.

Public exploits

PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
