Apache Thrift Java: Resource exhaustion in TSaslNonblockingServer
Summary
The Java implementation of Apache Thrift (libthrift) allocates memory for SASL frames without limit before a client authenticates. A remote, unauthenticated attacker can send crafted requests to exhaust memory and cause a denial of service on the affected Thrift server. Only Java services using TSaslNonblockingServer are affected, and the risk is highest for services reachable from the internet or untrusted networks.
Affected
- Apache Thrift Java bindings (org.apache.thrift:libthrift) before 0.25.0
- Java applications that use libthrift as a direct or transitive dependency, for example via jena-arq 5.5.0 (libthrift 0.22.0)
- Distribution packages: Unknown, check your distribution's security tracker
Fixed in
- Apache Thrift 0.25.0 (org.apache.thrift:libthrift:0.25.0)
- Distribution packages: Unknown, check your distribution's security tracker
Workaround
- No vendor workaround known.
- If patching is delayed, restrict network access to the Thrift service port to trusted sources only.
- Monitor memory usage and connection counts of affected Java services.
Exploitation
- Known exploited: No evidence found. Not listed as known exploited by a third-party tracker.
- Public proof of concept: None found in the sources reviewed.
- CISA SSVC: Exploitation none, automatable yes, technical impact partial.
Our recommendation
- Inventory Java services and check for libthrift versions below 0.25.0, including transitive dependencies in lockfiles and deployed JARs.
- Upgrade libthrift to 0.25.0 and check distribution packages separately.
- Prioritise any internet-reachable or untrusted-network Thrift Java service.
- Upgrading to 0.25.0 also addresses the related follow-up CVE-2026-94639.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
