Filecoin Pin: Authorization bypass in GitHub Action upload workflow
Summary
The Filecoin Pin GitHub Action (upload-action) does not detect fork-sourced pull requests when run through a privileged workflow_run workflow. An external contributor can submit a fork pull request whose artifacts are then uploaded using the repository owner's Filecoin wallet. This allows unauthorized storage spending, dataset pollution and consumption of the wallet funds; disclosure of the wallet private key is not required.
Affected
- filecoin-project Filecoin Pin versions before 1.1.0
- Affected component: GitHub Action in upload-action/
- Relevant only when the action runs in a workflow_run setup that processes artifacts from fork pull requests with a wallet private key configured
Fixed in
- Fixed in version 1.1.0
- The 0.x action line receives no backport and must be migrated to a fixed 1.x release
Workaround
Unknown.
- No vendor-documented workaround found.
- Until the upgrade is done, do not run the upload step from workflow_run on artifacts produced by fork pull requests, and do not expose the wallet key to that path.
Exploitation
- Not known to be exploited.
- CISA KEV: not listed.
- No public proof of concept found in the sources reviewed.
Our recommendation
- Upgrade to Filecoin Pin 1.1.0 or later and remove any 0.x version pins.
- Until the upgrade is complete, stop running the upload step on artifacts from fork pull requests.
- Keep the funded balance of the wallet low and review recent wallet and storage activity for uploads that were not authorized.
- Verify the advisory GHSA-4rpx-vcp4-863j before acting, as the version details were taken from third-party mirrors.
- Exposure is limited to public repositories that accept outside contributions and use the action with a wallet key.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.

Original description (NVD)
Filecoin Pin is an IPFS Pinning Service API implementation that pins to Filecoin's PDP service. Prior to 1.1.0, the upload GitHub Action's fork detection in `upload-action/src/build.js` checks only `event.pull_request`. In the documented two-workflow pattern, an untrusted fork pull-request workflow produces an artifact and a privileged `workflow_run` workflow downloads and uploads it. Because `workflow_run` has no `event.pull_request`, `isForkPR` becomes false and `uploadStatus` becomes `pending-upload`. The action later resolves `workflow_run.pull_requests` without repeating the fork check before initializing the wallet with `walletPrivateKey` and uploading the artifact. An external contributor can therefore cause attacker-controlled artifacts to be stored using the repository owner's Filecoin wallet, incurring unauthorized storage expenditure, dataset pollution and consumption of configured wallet funds. Disclosure of the wallet private key is not required. The 0.x action line is not receiving a backport and must be migrated to a fixed 1.x release. This issue is fixed in version 1.1.0.
