FileRise: WebDAV Basic authentication bypasses TOTP/MFA
Summary
FileRise, a self-hosted web-based file manager, does not enforce the configured TOTP second factor for WebDAV Basic authentication when an administrator has enabled WebDAV. An attacker who knows the primary username and password of a TOTP-enabled account can access the WebDAV service and use that account's WebDAV file permissions. The browser login enforces TOTP, so the MFA control is only bypassed on the WebDAV path.
Affected
- FileRise versions before 3.16.0, only if WebDAV is enabled
- Vendor advisory states affected versions are < 3.16.0
Fixed in
- Fixed in FileRise 3.16.0 (commit f7114ca2a4e624238dda0d097a07ad6b05c11bb6)
- Later releases are available; upgrade to the newest release
Workaround
- No official workaround for unpatched versions other than upgrading.
- Vendor guidance for TOTP accounts is to use an account without TOTP for WebDAV, which removes the second factor. This is not recommended.
- If patching is not possible immediately, disable WebDAV or restrict access to the internal network or a VPN.
Exploitation
- No known exploitation in the wild; the CVE is not in the CISA KEV catalog.
- CISA SSVC lists exploitation as PoC; automatable: no; technical impact: total.
- Attacker requires valid primary credentials (PR:L). Internet-facing instances are the main risk.
Our recommendation
- Upgrade FileRise to the newest release, at least 3.16.0.
- Before upgrading, check FR_TRUSTED_PROXIES if proxy-header login is used.
- Disable WebDAV if it is not needed.
- If WebDAV is needed, restrict it to the internal network or a VPN.
- Enforce unique, strong passwords for all accounts, especially TOTP-enabled accounts and administrators.
- Review WebDAV access logs for logins from unexpected sources.
- Check the other vulnerabilities fixed in the same release (CVE-2026-57489, CVE-2026-57491, CVE-2026-57492, CVE-2026-57493).
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.

Original description (NVD)
FileRise is a self-hosted web-based file manager with multi-file upload, editing, and batch operations. Prior to 3.16.0, when an administrator has enabled WebDAV, FileRise WebDAV Basic authentication validates only the account username and password through AuthModel::authenticate() and does not enforce the account's configured TOTP factor. An attacker who knows valid primary credentials for a TOTP-enabled account can authenticate to the enabled WebDAV service without supplying the second factor and exercise the account's WebDAV file permissions. The browser login path enforces TOTP, but the separate public/webdav.php authentication callback did not. This issue is fixed in version 3.16.0.
