Argo CD: Command injection in repo-server via SSH repository proxy URL

CVE-2026-55797High 8.8

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

Argo CD contains a command injection in the repo-server in the versions listed below. When an SSH Git repository is configured with a SOCKS5 proxy URL, the proxy host and port are passed unescaped to a shell command (SSH ProxyCommand). An attacker who can create or update a repository or repository credential template can run commands in the repo-server and read the Git, Helm and OCI credentials stored there. Unauthenticated attackers cannot exploit this directly.

Affected

  • Argo CD 2.11.0 to 2.14.21
  • Argo CD 3.0.0 to below 3.3.15
  • Argo CD 3.4.0 to below 3.4.10
  • Argo CD 3.5.0 to below 3.5.4
  • Argo CD 3.6.0-rc1

Fixed in

  • 3.3.15
  • 3.4.10
  • 3.5.4
  • 3.6.0-rc2

According to the vendor advisory, 2.x and 3.0 to 3.2 receive no patch and must be upgraded to a fixed release line.

Workaround

  • Do not set a proxy on SSH repositories or on credential templates that match SSH repositories.
  • Restrict who can create or edit repositories, repository secrets and credential templates (RBAC).
  • Review existing repositories for proxy settings on SSH repositories.

Exploitation

  • CISA SSVC assessment: exploitation none, not automatable.
  • No evidence of exploitation in the wild was found; CISA KEV status was not verified.
  • No public proof of concept was identified.

Our recommendation

  • Identify all Argo CD instances and their versions.
  • Upgrade to a fixed release of your minor line (3.3.15, 3.4.10, 3.5.4, 3.6.0-rc2 or later). Move 2.x and 3.0 to 3.2 installations to a supported, fixed version.
  • Until patched, remove proxy settings from SSH repositories and matching credential templates.
  • Limit repository and credential management to trusted administrators, and rotate Git, Helm and OCI credentials if misuse is suspected.
  • Upgrade the whole Argo CD installation, as the same release line contains other fixes.

Public exploits

PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.

Original description (NVD)

Argo CD is a declarative, GitOps continuous delivery tool for Kubernetes. From 2.11.0 until 3.3.15, 3.4.10, 3.5.4, and 3.6.0-rc2, the Argo CD repo-server is vulnerable to command injection when it clones, tests, or fetches an SSH Git repository configured with a proxy URL. The proxy host and port are embedded in an SSH ProxyCommand that is executed through a shell without neutralizing shell metacharacters. A user who can create or update a repository or repository credential template can supply a crafted proxy host to execute commands in the repo-server and access its Git, Helm, and OCI credentials. This issue is fixed in versions 3.3.15, 3.4.10, 3.5.4, and 3.6.0-rc2.
