DeepTutor: Path traversal in TutorBot filesystem tool
Summary
DeepTutor 1.4.0 contains a path traversal flaw in the TutorBot filesystem tool (EditFileTool.execute). A remote caller who can reach the live TutorBot WebSocket interface can induce the tool layer to write or edit files at absolute paths outside the intended bot workspace. The CVSS base score is 9.8 (critical), and no user interaction or privileges are required. The vendor fixed the issue in version 1.4.1.
Affected
- DeepTutor 1.4.0 (VulDB lists up to 1.4.0)
- Snyk lists the range below 1.4.1 as affected
Fixed in
- DeepTutor 1.4.1 or later (fix listed in the v1.4.1 release notes, issue #517)
- Upgrade with: pip install -U deeptutor
Workaround
- No vendor workaround known. Upgrading is the documented fix.
- VulDB suggests restricting WebSocket traffic to trusted internal networks only (generic suggestion, not tested by the vendor).
- Keep the WebSocket and TutorBot endpoints off the internet.
- Run the service as an unprivileged user with write access limited to the bot workspace.
Exploitation
- CISA ADP (SSVC) records exploitation as PoC, automatable as yes, technical impact as total.
- VulDB states that no exploit exists. The status is disputed.
- A public third-party write-up is referenced in the CVE record; its content was not verified.
- Not listed in CISA KEV. No known in-the-wild exploitation found.
Our recommendation
- Upgrade DeepTutor to 1.4.1 or later as a priority.
- Until patched, keep the service and its WebSocket endpoints off the internet and restrict access to trusted networks.
- Run the service with least privileges and limit write access to the bot workspace.
- Review logs and the file system for changes outside the bot workspace.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
