QNAP Download Station: Incorrect permission assignment allows privilege escalation
Summary
QNAP Download Station on QTS and QuTS hero NAS systems contains an incorrect permission assignment. The script ds-move-files.sh is writable and executed as root. A local attacker with an existing administrator account can exploit this to compromise the security of the system.
Affected
- QNAP Download Station 5.10.x before 5.10.1.312
- QNAP Download Station 5.11.x before 5.11.2.321
- Default configuration: not affected
Fixed in
- Download Station 5.10.1.312 and later
- Download Station 5.11.2.321 and later
- Newer builds also fix CVE-2026-39993 (5.10.2.313 and later, 5.11.3.322 and later)
Workaround
Unknown.
Exploitation
- No evidence of exploitation in the wild found.
- CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable no, technical impact total.
- EPSS 0.00134. No public proof of concept found.
Our recommendation
- Inventory QNAP NAS units with Download Station and their versions.
- Update to the latest available 5.10.x or 5.11.x build, at minimum 5.10.1.312 or 5.11.2.321.
- Review administrator accounts, enable 2FA and check for unexpected admin logins.
- Restrict management access to LAN or VPN and remove unneeded internet exposure.
- Monitor QNAP advisories and NVD for a QSA ID and proof of concept.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
