QNAP Notes Station 3: Local privilege escalation via incorrect permissions
Summary
QNAP Notes Station 3 versions 3.9.x before 3.9.11 contain an incorrect permission assignment for a critical resource (CWE-732). A local user with a valid account on the NAS can exploit this flaw to gain higher privileges and compromise the system. The CNA rates it as high severity (CVSS 8.5), but the attacker needs a local account first.
Affected
- QNAP Notes Station 3 3.9.x before 3.9.11
- Default configuration: not affected according to the CNA record
Fixed in
- Notes Station 3 3.9.11 and later
Workaround
- No vendor workaround known.
- Until patched, remove unused user accounts and shared or guest accounts on the NAS, since the flaw requires a valid local user account.
Exploitation
- No known exploitation in the wild. CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable no, technical impact total.
- No public proof of concept found.
- One unverified social media mention of CVE-2026-34008 exists; its content could not be verified.
- EPSS: 0.00121.
Our recommendation
- Inventory QNAP NAS devices and the installed Notes Station 3 version.
- Update Notes Station 3 to 3.9.12 or later, which also covers CVE-2026-39991.
- Review the QNAP PHP advisory QSA-26-18 and apply any fixes it lists for Notes Station 3; confirm the fixed version with QNAP first.
- Review user accounts on each NAS and remove unused or shared ones.
- Keep NAS management and remote access off the internet where possible.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
