TastyIgniter: PHP object injection via settings deserialization

CVE-2026-29001High 8.6

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

TastyIgniter up to and including 4.4.5 deserializes stored settings values without restriction. An authenticated administrator can save a crafted serialized PHP object through the admin settings form, for example in the maintenance_message setting, and execute operating system commands as the PHP application user. The malicious value stays active until it is overwritten. No vendor fix was available at the time of the sources.

Affected

  • TastyIgniter up to and including 4.4.5
  • Unknown: whether any later version exists, as no vendor advisory or fixed release was found

Fixed in

Unknown. No fixed version was available at the time of the sources.

Workaround

  • Restrict access to the admin area (/admin) to a VPN or a fixed IP allowlist. Do not expose it to the public internet.
  • Enforce MFA and unique, strong passwords for all admin accounts. Remove unused admin accounts.
  • Review stored settings for unexpected serialized-looking values, especially maintenance_message. Perform this as a read-only check.

Exploitation

  • Exploitation requires an authenticated administrator account (PR:H).
  • Known exploitation in the wild: not confirmed. The CISA SSVC data lists exploitation as none.
  • Public proof of concept: unclear. The CVE record links a GitHub issue tagged as exploit, but its content could not be reviewed.

Our recommendation

  • Check whether TastyIgniter is in use and whether version 4.4.5 or earlier is installed.
  • Restrict the admin area as described above and enforce MFA for all admin accounts.
  • Monitor for new or modified PHP files and unexpected processes under the web server user. If compromise is suspected, rebuild from a known-good copy and rotate credentials.
  • Ask the vendor for a fix timeline and check the GitHub issue for updates.

Public exploits

PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.

Original description (NVD)

TastyIgniter through 4.4.5 contain a PHP object injection vulnerability that allows authenticated administrators to achieve arbitrary code execution by submitting a serialized PHP object as a settings value, which is stored unsanitized and later unserialized by getValueAttribute() when the setting is read. Attackers can submit a serialized gadget chain, such as one generated via phpggc, through the admin settings form (for example the maintenance_message setting loaded by CheckMaintenance.php) to achieve arbitrary operating-system command execution as the PHP application process user, with the impact persisting until the value is overwritten.
