IBM DataPower Gateway: Denial of Service via heap-based buffer overflow
Summary
IBM DataPower Gateway versions 10.5.0.0 to 10.5.0.22, 10.6.0.0 to 10.6.0.10, 10.6.1 to 10.6.6 and 11.0.0.0 to 11.0.0.2 contain a heap-based buffer overflow (CWE-787). A remote attacker can exploit it without authentication to crash the gateway and cause a Denial of Service. Because DataPower often sits at the edge of integration and API traffic, a crash can disrupt every service behind it.
Affected
- IBM DataPower Gateway 10.5.0.0 through 10.5.0.22
- IBM DataPower Gateway 10.6.0.0 through 10.6.0.10
- IBM DataPower Gateway 10.6.1 through 10.6.6 (10.6CD)
- IBM DataPower Gateway 11.0.0.0 through 11.0.0.2
Fixed in
- 10.5.0 branch: 10.5.0.23
- 10.6.0 branch: 10.6.0.11
- 10.6CD branch: 11.0.0.3
- 11.0.0 branch: 11.0.0.3
- Note: the IBM bulletin headline names 11.0.0.3, 10.6.0.11 and 10.5.0.23. The per-branch mapping was taken from the CVE record and an aggregator and should be confirmed on the IBM bulletin page before rollout.
Workaround
Unknown. No vendor-documented workaround was found. Ask IBM support or check the bulletin for updates.
Exploitation
- No known exploitation in the wild found.
- No public proof of concept found.
- EPSS about 0.003 (low predicted exploitation probability).
- CISA SSVC assessment: Exploitation none, Automatable yes, Technical Impact partial.
Our recommendation
- Upgrade to the fixed release for your branch as soon as possible.
- Patch the whole IBM bulletin, which covers about 20 other DataPower CVEs, some rated higher.
- Check whether DataPower is internet-facing or reachable from untrusted networks and restrict access if it is not needed there.
- Monitor gateway availability and logs for crashes or unusual requests.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.

Original description (NVD)
IBM DataPower Gateway 10.5.0.0 through 10.5.0.22, 10.6.1 through 10.6.6, 10.6.0.0 through 10.6.0.10, and 11.0.0.0 through 11.0.0.2 could allow a remote attacker to cause a denial of service due to a heap-based buffer overflow.
