IBM DataPower Gateway: Out-of-bounds write enables remote code execution
Summary
IBM DataPower Gateway versions 10.5.0.0 to 10.5.0.22, 10.6.0.0 to 10.6.0.10, 10.6.1 to 10.6.6 (10.6CD) and 11.0.0.0 to 11.0.0.2 contain an out-of-bounds write (CWE-787). A remote attacker can exploit it without authentication and user interaction to execute arbitrary code, which may compromise confidentiality, integrity and availability of the gateway. The CVSS base score is 9.8 (critical). The gateway is the relevant risk driver, so internet-facing instances are the highest priority.
Affected
- IBM DataPower Gateway 10.5.0: 10.5.0.0 to 10.5.0.22
- IBM DataPower Gateway 10.6.0: 10.6.0.0 to 10.6.0.10
- IBM DataPower Gateway 10.6CD: 10.6.1 to 10.6.6
- IBM DataPower Gateway 11.0.0: 11.0.0.0 to 11.0.0.2
Fixed in
- IBM DataPower Gateway 10.5.0: 10.5.0.23
- IBM DataPower Gateway 10.6.0: 10.6.0.11
- IBM DataPower Gateway 10.6CD: 11.0.0.3
- IBM DataPower Gateway 11.0.0: 11.0.0.3
Workaround
Unknown. No vendor-published workaround was found. Patching is the remedy. If patching is delayed, restrict access to the management and service interfaces so they are not reachable from the internet.
Exploitation
- Not known to be exploited in the wild. CISA SSVC lists exploitation as none and automatable as yes.
- No public proof of concept was found in the research.
Our recommendation
- Confirm whether any DataPower Gateway instance is in use and which branch and version it runs.
- Apply the fixed version from IBM security bulletin 7289775 as soon as possible, starting with internet-facing units.
- Restrict management and service interfaces to trusted networks until patched.
- Review gateway logs for unexpected crashes, restarts or new processes.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.
