IBM DataPower Gateway: XML external entity injection (XXE)
Summary
IBM DataPower Gateway processes XML data in the affected versions without properly restricting external entity references. A remote attacker can exploit this over the network, without privileges, to expose sensitive information or consume memory resources. IBM rates the CVSS base score at 8.2. Exposure depends on whether the gateway is reachable from untrusted networks.
Affected
- IBM DataPower Gateway 10.5.0.0 through 10.5.0.22
- IBM DataPower Gateway 10.6.0.0 through 10.6.0.10
- IBM DataPower Gateway 10.6.1 through 10.6.6 (listed as 10.6CD)
- IBM DataPower Gateway 11.0.0.0 through 11.0.0.2
Fixed in
- 10.5.0 branch: 10.5.0.23
- 10.6.0 branch: 10.6.0.11
- 10.6.1 to 10.6.6 (10.6CD): 11.0.0.3
- 11.0.0 branch: 11.0.0.3
Workaround
Unknown. No vendor workaround is documented in the sources. Restrict network access to DataPower services and management interfaces, and confirm that external entity resolution is disabled in XML processing where the product allows it.
Exploitation
- CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable yes, technical impact partial.
- HOL and VulDB list no known exploitation at the time of analysis.
- EPSS score is low (0.00339).
Our recommendation
- If you run DataPower, patch to the fixed release for your branch as soon as possible; IBM strongly advises upgrading.
- Until patching is complete, limit access to the gateway and restrict XML processing where possible.
- Check whether the gateway is internet-facing and review logs for unusual XML requests.
- If a managed-service provider or partner operates DataPower for you, confirm their patch status.
- If you do not run DataPower, no action needed.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.

Original description (NVD)
IBM DataPower Gateway 10.5.0.0 through 10.5.0.22, 10.6.1 through 10.6.6, 10.6.0.0 through 10.6.0.10, and 11.0.0.0 through 11.0.0.2 is vulnerable to an XML external entity injection (XXE) attack when processing XML data. A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to expose sensitive information or consume memory resources.
