Checkmk: Open redirect and XSS in Setup in-page search

CVE-2026-14452High 8.6

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

The reset_url parameter of the Setup in-page search in Checkmk is not validated. An attacker can craft a URL that runs script in the session of a logged-in user with Setup access, or redirects that user to an external site. The attack requires the victim to open the crafted URL and click Reset or submit an empty search.

Affected

  • Checkmk 2.5.0 before 2.5.0p15
  • Checkmk 2.4.0 before 2.4.0p38
  • Checkmk 2.3.0 before 2.3.0p51
  • Checkmk 2.2.0 (EOL, no fixed build listed; affected per CNA record, default unaffected per CNA)

Fixed in

  • Checkmk 2.5.0p15
  • Checkmk 2.4.0p38
  • Checkmk 2.3.0p51
  • The vendor werk lists 2.4.0p39 and 2.3.0p52 as releases containing the fix. Verify the exact versions against the werk before change planning.
  • Unknown whether a fixed 2.2.0 build exists. Upgrade to a supported branch.

Workaround

Unknown. No vendor-documented workaround was found. The fix restricts reset_url to same-origin relative URLs.

Exploitation

  • CISA SSVC: exploitation none, not automatable, total technical impact
  • VulDB: no exploit available
  • Strix: not listed in KEV
  • No public proof of concept found in research; this does not prove that none exists

Our recommendation

  • Upgrade to 2.5.0p15, 2.4.0p38, 2.3.0p51 or later in the next regular maintenance window, or sooner if Checkmk is reachable from the internet or used by many administrators.
  • Migrate any 2.2.0 instance, as it cannot be patched in place.
  • Limit the number of accounts with Setup rights.
  • Tell administrators not to open unexpected Checkmk links received by email or chat.
  • Check web server access logs for reset_url values containing javascript: or foreign hosts.

Public exploits

PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.

Original description (NVD)

Improper validation of the reset_url parameter of the Setup in-page search in Checkmk <2.5.0p15, <2.4.0p38, <2.3.0p51 and 2.2.0 (EOL) allows an attacker to execute arbitrary script in the session of an authenticated user with Setup access, or to redirect that user to an arbitrary external site, by tricking the user into opening a crafted URL and clicking the Reset button or submitting an empty search.
