Highcharts JS: Cross-site scripting via javascript: URL in credits label
Summary
Highcharts JS, a JavaScript charting library, does not validate the credits.href URL before assigning it to the window location when the credits label is clicked. An attacker who can control the chart configuration can supply a javascript: URL and run script in the origin of the hosting page when a user clicks the credits label. Highcharts Stock, Maps and Gantt are affected as they ship from the same package.
Affected
- Highcharts JS before 11.4.9
- Highcharts JS 12.0.0 to before 12.6.1
- Highcharts JS 13.0.0 to before 13.1.0 (the CNA record lists the range up to 13.1.1; confirm with the vendor)
- Highcharts Stock, Maps and Gantt built from the same package
Fixed in
- 11.4.9
- 12.6.1
- 13.1.0
Workaround
- No official workaround published.
- Until patched, do not allow untrusted input to set chart credits options.
- Disable the credits label where it is not needed.
Exploitation
- No evidence of active exploitation found.
- No public proof-of-concept confirmed.
- Not listed in CISA KEV according to an aggregator; not verified on the KEV page.
- EPSS: 0.43 % (percentile 38).
Our recommendation
- Inventory all Highcharts usage, including transitive npm dependencies and bundled copies in third-party products.
- Upgrade to 11.4.9, 12.6.1 or 13.1.0 or later.
- Vaadin Charts pins its own Highcharts version; apply the Vaadin update.
- Check whether chart configuration is built from user input and restrict it.
- Monitor NVD and CISA KEV for changes.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.

Original description (NVD)
Highcharts JS is a JavaScript charting library based on SVG. Prior to 11.4.9, 12.6.1, and 13.1.0, Highcharts assigns credits.href to the window location when the credits label is clicked without checking the URL against the allowed-scheme list. An attacker who controls chart configuration can provide a javascript URL and run script in the origin of the hosting page when a user clicks the credits label. Highcharts Stock, Maps, and Gantt are included because they ship from the same package. This issue is fixed in 11.4.9, 12.6.1 and 13.1.0.
