FOG: Privilege escalation to root via Storage Node API edit

CVE-2026-116778High 8.8

← All vulnerabilities

Summary

FOG, an open-source imaging and inventory suite, lets an authenticated API user with uType=1 modify Storage Node user, password and ftppath fields through the API because no administrator role is enforced. When storage replication is enabled, these values are passed to an lftp command run as root, so the low-privileged user can execute commands as root on the FOG server. The attacker needs valid credentials, the user's API token and the global FOG API token.

Affected

  • FOG before 1.5.10.2253
  • FOG before 1.6.0-RC-1

Fixed in

  • 1.5.10.2253
  • 1.6.0-RC-1

Workaround

  • No vendor workaround known; upgrading is the fix.
  • Disable storage replication until the patch is applied, if it is not needed.
  • Restrict access to the FOG web GUI and API to the management network.

Exploitation

  • Not known to be exploited in the wild.
  • No public exploit code confirmed at the time of research.
  • Not listed in CISA KEV according to a secondary aggregator.
  • CISA SSVC: exploitation none, automatable no, technical impact total.

Our recommendation

  • Upgrade FOG to 1.5.10.2253, 1.6.0-RC-1 or later.
  • Review which accounts have API access and which non-administrator accounts can reach the API; rotate the global and user API tokens if misuse is suspected.
  • Check Storage Node records for unexpected changes to user, password or ftppath fields.
  • Confirm that the FOG GUI and API are not exposed to the internet.

Public exploits

PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.

Original description (NVD)

FOG is a free open-source cloning/imaging/rescue suite/inventory management system. Prior to 1.5.10.2253 and 1.6.0-RC-1, an authenticated API-enabled user with uType=1 who possesses both the user's API token and the global FOG API token can use PUT /fog/storagenode/{id}/edit to modify Storage Node user, pass, and ftppath fields because the API validates the credentials but does not enforce an administrator-only role. With storage replication enabled and a usable Storage Node, FOGImageReplicator interpolates those fields into an lftp command executed through proc_open() by the root-running service, allowing the low-privileged user to execute commands as root. This issue is fixed in versions 1.5.10.2253 and 1.6.0-RC-1.
