EPICS Base: Out-of-bounds read in network message processing
Summary
EPICS Base 7.0.10 and earlier, an open source toolkit used to build control systems in research facilities and some industrial environments, does not sufficiently validate element or length values in network messages. An unauthenticated attacker who can reach the EPICS service over the network can make the application read beyond an allocated buffer. This can cause a denial of service and may expose adjacent memory contents. The CVE record gives a CVSS v4.0 score of 8.7, but the sources differ on scoring and CWE.
Affected
- EPICS Base release 7.0.10 and earlier (0 to <= 7.0.10)
Fixed in
- EPICS Base 7.0.11 (released 27 Oct 2026)
- Which PR fixes this specific CVE is unknown. The advisory links epics-base PRs #934 and #937 and pvDataCPP PR #109 as mitigations.
Workaround
- Restrict network access to the EPICS services (default TCP 5064 and 5075) to known hosts. This is a stopgap, not a fix.
- Separate control networks from business networks and do not expose EPICS services to the internet.
Exploitation
- CISA reported no known public exploitation of these vulnerabilities at publication.
- The CVE is not listed in the CISA KEV catalogue.
- No public proof of concept was found in the sources checked.
Our recommendation
- Inventory all systems running EPICS Base, including test benches and lab setups.
- Upgrade EPICS Base to 7.0.11. Test older Channel Access clients first, as stricter message validation may affect compatibility.
- Segment the network and limit access to EPICS ports.
- Monitor for unusual traffic to EPICS services.
Public exploits
PoC-in-GitHub, Metasploit and Exploit-DB list nothing for this CVE.

Original description (NVD)
In EPICS Base release 7.0.10 and prior, an insufficient validation of element or length values in a network message can cause the application to read beyond the bounds of an allocated buffer. This may lead to denial of service and could expose adjacent memory contents.
